Description
4140 STEEL GRADE
SAE 4140 steel is a low-alloy steel that is composed of iron, carbon, and other alloying elements. It is considered a medium-carbon steel and is known for its good strength, toughness, and wear resistance. SAE 4140 is also known as a chromium-molybdenum steel, as it contains chromium and molybdenum as the primary alloying elements.
SAE 4140 is a versatile steel that can be heat-treated to a wide range of mechanical properties. It is commonly used in the manufacturing of gears, shafts, spindles, and other machine parts. It is also commonly used in the oil and gas industry for downhole tools and wellhead components.
One of the unique properties of SAE 4140 steel is that it can be heat-treated to a high strength level while still maintaining good toughness and ductility. This makes it an ideal choice for applications that require a balance of strength and toughness.
SAE 4140 steel is also known for its good weldability and machinability. It can be welded using most common welding methods and can be machined using conventional methods. However, it is important to note that its high hardenability can make it difficult to machine in the hardened and tempered condition.
SAE 4140 steel conforms to the ASTM A29/A29M standard and is available in a wide range of sizes and shapes. It is commonly used in a variety of industries such as construction, mining, oil and gas, and transportation.

MATERIAL PROPERTIES OF SAE 4140 STEEL FOR FABRICATION AND HEAT TREATMENT
Machinability
AISI 4140 alloy steel has good machinability in the annealed condition.
Forming
4140 alloy steel has high ductility. It can be formed using conventional techniques in the annealed condition. It requires more pressure or force for forming because it is tougher than plain carbon steels.
Welding
AISI 4140 can be welded using all conventional techniques. However, the mechanical properties of this steel will be affected if it is welded in the heat treated condition, and post weld heat treatment should be performed.
Heat Treatment of AISI 4140 steel
Hardening
AISI 4140 bars are hardened by heating to 845°C followed by quenching in oil.
Normalising
Heating between 870-900°C (1600-1650°F), followed by air cooling to refine the grain structure and improve mechanical properties.
Forging
The hot working temperature for SAE 4140 steel typically falls within the range of 850-1200°C (1560-2190°F). This is the temperature at which the steel becomes more malleable and can be easily formed or shaped using various hot working processes such as forging or rolling. The exact temperature within this range may depend on factors such as the desired deformation process, material thickness, and specific manufacturing requirements.
Hot Working
4140 steel can be hot worked at 816 to 1038°C.
Cold Working
AISI 4140 alloy steel can be cold worked using conventional methods in the annealed condition.
Annealing
AISI 4140 steel is annealed by eating between 815-845°C (1500-1550°F), followed by slow cooling in a furnace or air to relieve internal stress and improve machinability.
Tempering
4140 alloy steel can be tempered by heating between 150-620°C (300-1150°F), depending on desired properties, and holding at a specific temperature for a certain period (usually 1-2 hours) to reduce brittleness and improve toughness.
The hardness of the steel can be increased if it has a lower tempering temperature. For example, tensile strength of 225 ksi can be achieved by tempering at 316°C (600°F), and a tensile strength of 130 ksi can be achieved by tempering at 538°C (1000°F).
Hardening
AISI 4140 alloy steel can be hardened by cold working, or heating and quenching.
The specific heat treatment parameters may vary depending on the desired material properties and manufacturing requirements. It is recommended to consult the appropriate technical specifications or materials guidelines for precise information.
